Six Cold Weather Looks for You to Try❄️

One of the six cold weather looks in this post. A navy lady sweater, wide leg dark wash jeans and a red plaid scarf looped around my neck.

It is really cold in much of the country right now, and after recently spending time in Chicago, I thought it would be helpful for my cold-weather friends to see some cold weather looks. These outfits can easily take you from casual errands to lunch with friends and even to work. See if they resonate with you.

Please read along and tell me which of these looks appeals to you most 👇. And before purchasing any of my linked pieces, be sure to peek into your own closet first 🪞. I always want to encourage you to explore new ways to wear the pieces you already love.

In this post...

Look #1: A Chic Column of Color ✨

The first look features a darling mock-neck sweater with cap sleeves. The neckline is incredibly flattering on an aging neck, and the cap sleeves are just as kind to the upper arms. This soft sweater is slightly fitted, and I absolutely love it.

I paired it with faux leather pants and black suede booties. Together, these three pieces create a column of color, which is always flattering — it visually makes everyone look taller and sleeker.

To finish this cold weather look, I added a terrific Glen Plaid jacket in brown and black. Glen plaid blazers are subtly interesting and perfect throughout fall and winter. Lastly, I completed the outfit with classic silver jewelry: diamond stud earrings (cubic zirconia works beautifully too), a silver watch, and a silver tennis bangle. Wearing classic jewelry every day elevates even the simplest outfit — and you’ll see that theme repeated throughout this post 💎.

Look #2: Solid Colors with Style 🎨 (Perfect to Perk Up Cold Weather Looks)

This second of my cold weather looks show how to pull together two solid-color pieces in a polished way. I started with a burgundy V-neck sweater and added a simple silver pavé heart necklace for interest 💖. I paired it again with the same trousers from Look #1, along with the suede booties and silver jewelry.

To add some definite zhush, I finished the look with a colorful silk scarf 🧣. I tied it in a pretty knot that can be worn inside or outside the neckline (watch the short video 📹 to see exactly how I tied it).

You could easily substitute navy, khaki, or burgundy pants here — and any solid sweater you love. Find a scarf that speaks to you and let it act as a stylish third piece that pulls everything together.

Looks #3 & #4: From Work to Play 🔄

/Blazer/ Henley/ Pants/ Shoes/ Earrings/ Watch/ Bangle/

These two cold weather looks show how a quick switch of pieces can take an outfit from work to play. I started with a burgundy striped Henley and paired it with burgundy ponte pants, brown suede loafers (for a bit of textural interest), and the same silver jewelry.

For work, I added the same Glen Plaid jacket from Look #1. Mixing patterns works here because the blazer includes hints of burgundy. You could easily substitute black or brown pants and a black or navy striped top — just check what you already have in your closet 🧥.

To take this outfit from work to play, simply remove the blazer and drape a cream cable-knit sweater over your shoulders (see the video 📹 if you’d like to watch how I did this). We often think of this styling trick for summer, but it works beautifully in winter too.

For these cold weather looks, if it’s really cold and you need an overcoat, untie the sweater and fold the sleeves over each other like a cozy scarf. This fills in your coat neckline perfectly. When you arrive, remove your coat and retie the sweater — effortless and chic.

Look #5: Cozy Errands & Everyday Comfort ☕👟

This fifth of these six cold weather looks is perfect for coffee runs, grandkid school drop-off, or errands on icy winter days. I’m wearing a darling olive sweatsuit that is incredibly warm and comfortable. (I usually wear a medium in sweats, but I sized down to a small in this set.)

I layered on a black cashmere coat and added black sneakers — ideal for traction in unexpectedly slippery parking lots ❄️.

Here’s the key to making this look work: I did a bit of makeup, styled my hair, and added my usual silver jewelry. That’s the secret. These small details turn sweats into a true look instead of pajamas in disguise 😉.

Look #6: Stripes, Plaid & a Pop of Color ❤️🧣

/Striped Lady Jacket/ Wide Leg Jeans/ Booties/ Scarf/ Earrings/ Watch/ Bangle/

This last of the six cold weather looks might be my favorite. I love the punch of a red plaid scarf, though any fun long winter scarf will work. I paired it with the cutest navy-striped lady-jacket sweater (with gold buttons, no less!) and dark-wash wide-leg jeans.

My black suede booties work beautifully with this jean silhouette. Once again, I wore my silver jewelry — yes, you can absolutely mix metals with those gold buttons ✨.

I folded the scarf in half, slipped the ends through the fold, and snugged it up. This is such an easy way to tie a scarf (see the video 📹), and it fills in your coat neckline perfectly. This outfit would be especially lovely paired with a classic camel-hair coat 🧥.

There you have it, friends — six fun, sharp looks for cold winter days ❄️✨.

Tell me in the comments below ⬇️ which of these cold weather looks you’d wear.

Happy January 🤍

XO,

Dr. Julie
