I don’t know about you, but when I think of fall I think of plaid blazer outfits!
Fall just reminds me of plaid flannel shirts, plaid placemats, and plaid scarves.
Maybe it’s because I can’t wear plaid in California when I get there in January because it gets too warm. (sigh!)
So since Labor Day just rolled by, I am ready to show you THE CUTEST PLAID JACKET that you really SHOULD consider for your fall wardrobe.
AND ONCE YOU’VE done that, take a look at this VERY CUTE BLAZER and read how to style a blazer for fall in five ways!!! And that doesn’t include cooler weather looks using various sweaters… So, stay tuned for those as the weather permits.

Why this blazer for your blazer outfits?
I saw this lady’s plaid jacket during the Nordstrom Anniversary sale and it really caught my eye. It’s by Vince Camuto and it feels like lightweight wool. But, in fact, it is a blend of polyester, rayon, and spandex. The photos on the Nordstrom website don’t do the long plaid jacket justice. It’s MUCH cuter in real life as I think my photos show. It’s a more modern style longer length jacket that is definitely menswear-inspired.
It even has a slightly padded shoulder.
Don’t freak out for those of you (like me) who remember the really padded 80’s shoulder line. This is just subtle padding which looks great!
Trust me! Pro-tip: A little padded shoulder is a very flattering profile as it tends to balance out any hip fullness.
Let’s get to how to style a blazer for fall!
How to Wear a Blazer with All Black Underneath:
This is probably the easiest outfit to put together with items you already have in your closet. Just take a black lightweight sweater or in my case, a black raw-edged tank, and pair it with black pants. I am wearing J.Jill’s Wearever slim pants, but truly, any cute well-fitting pants will do. This look is so easy to wear and black is universally flattering as it’s so slimming. If you’re traveling, it’s great for hiding soil. This is called “column dressing” where you wear the same color on top as well as on the bottom and it really makes everyone look taller and more slender (win, win!).
I think the blazer with this outfit, looks great open or buttoned. I added a colorful statement necklace that I found online and it has many of the pretty colors of the jacket including green, amber, brown, and gold. And it was such a buy! It even had coordinating earrings! Pro-tip: As we age, our necks become wrinkled. This is a sore spot for most women that I think can be remedied with pretty necklaces that draw attention there instead of the wrinkles. Pro-tip: Another great trick is to wear a v-neck as it tends to elongate the neck and draw attention to the neckline rather than the neck!
In the jacket, I am wearing a size 6. It runs big, but I don’t think it’s too roomy. The V-neck top I am wearing is another Nordstrom Anniversary sale find. It is a Halogen raw-edge tank that is terrific for layering. It comes in several colors. It runs a bit small. I am wearing a size small, but in the ivory, it was too tight. My shoes are black D’orsay pumps by AGL which are VERY comfortable and sexy!
How to Wear a Blazer with Jeans for Your Blazer Outfits:
I think wearing a women’s blazer with jeans is SUCH A CLASSIC fall look! I
It just screams, “FALL” to me!
I love the layering of a third piece.
I love the plaid of this jacket. Because it goes with so many colors and items.
This latest fashion blazer with the menswear details described above really looks cool paired with jeans. It can go with any kind of wash, but in this post, I will show it with distressed vintage jeans as well as my favorite dark wash denim.
In this outfit, I paired the women’s plaid jacket with the great valued black v-neck raw-edge tank, vintage jeans, and an amber-beaded choker. I love amber in the fall as it’s so classy and warm in tone (and another great buy!). I added nude booties and a sharp brown tote. Most of us have a favorite pair of jeans and tee in our closet (if not, check out my links), and just adding the blazer will make this a very on-trend outfit.
How to Wear Dark Florals with This Plaid Jacket:
Does this heading sound like too much?
Are you challenged by mixing patterns?
In this third look at how to wear a women’s blazer, I paired a cute dark floral top with the plaid jacket and dark wash jeans. I LOVE the interest this brings to the top and to the blazer. And when it’s still warm, you can remove the jacket and still have on a really cute look.
I added the same nude suede booties in the second look. They are by Blondo, and they are wonderfully waterproof (good for rainy fall and snowy winter days).
How to Wear this Plaid Jacket with a Button-Down Shirt:
Isn’t this fourth fall outfit so cute?
I love the blue cotton shirt and mine actually has little doggies on it. I couldn’t resist even though it’s from last year. Seriously, you can pull this ensemble with any light blue shirt.
There’s something about this look that looks a bit more business-like than I usually do (as a retired dermatologist). And I like it! I think it would go to most work environments as I paired the black pants from the first outfit, with the necklace from the second outfit. I added a black pebbled leather clutch with black patent leather D’orsay pumps (I love how flattering a D’orsay shoe looks).
Do you think this look works? I think it really does! Great for a dressier lunch meeting, possibly?
Fifth Outfit of the Plaid Blazer Outfits:
This outfit is by far the most casual, but also maybe, the most fun. I took a graphic tee and popped it under the jacket. I added these fan-favorite black pointe leggings and my trusty charcoal gray Taos sneakers. Lastly, I added my new black leather backpack from Madewell as well as my Blackhawks baseball cap. This is a perfect look for sightseeing, errands, or, just a casual Fall brunch with friends, don’t you agree?
What to Wear Under a Blazer
To make cute blazer outfits, you need to realize, that so many items can work as the layer under a blazer. For example, tee shirts and tanks work when it’s warmer. Turtlenecks, sweaters, and hoodies are wonderful as the temperatures drop. I love the look of a dressy camisole with pearls, for date night. I showed you a floral top under the plaid blazer above and of course lots of button-down shirts work under a jacket. I love a blazer over a dress as well.
Blazers are a classic third piece that completes so many outfits. This particular plaid blazer is a terrific buy (even now after the sale) and I believe it’s a staple you should consider adding to your fall wardrobe.
