Are you a fan of Black Watch Plaid?
Do you know what a Black watch plaid looks like?
Black Watch Plaid is a classic tartan plaid made of black, green, and blue. Scottish soldiers originally wore it to patrol the Highlands in 1725. Today, the Royal Regiment of Scotland wears the Black Watch tartan.
Black Watch Plaid is such a classic plaid, and I especially love it because wearing it doesn’t need to be limited to the Christmas holidays. It’s more subtle than, say, a red tartan plaid, and I think because of this, it can be worn from Thanksgiving through the entire winter.
This black, green, and navy plaid can be worn with many items in your closet. Of course, it looks great worn with all black, but it also looks terrific with denim or chambray. It looks good draped over a little black dress or a blue-striped turtleneck. It is a darling pattern for a flannel nightgown or leggings worn with boots.
I will show several ways that I love to wear black watch plaid. Please read to the bottom of the post as I have curated a collection of black watch items with varying price points. If you want to try this black watch pattern or expand your current collection, this post is for you.

Outfit #1: Plaid Poncho and All-Black Underneath

This is such a terrific holiday look! I wore a black ribbed Arlette turtleneck with black velvet leggings. I added black leather riding boots and a plaid poncho. One of my favorite tricks when wearing a poncho is to secure it (just in the front) with a belt. That way, it doesn’t slip off your shoulders.
Most of us have a pair of black pants and a black top in our closet. Adding the plaid poncho creates a terrific pulled-together look with little effort. This would work well with any style of black pants. I prefer the velvet leggings or straight legs, but whatever you like would be perfect. I wear my velvet leggings and pants from Thanksgiving throughout the winter if I am in cold weather. They always look sharp, and they are so comfortable to wear.
This look is a perfect Holiday Tea outfit!
Outfit #2 Plaid Poncho with Jeans and Stripes

This look is a bit unusual. I mixed patterns by pairing a blue striped turtleneck with the plaid poncho. I got the idea from the Talbots catalog. They paired this striped turtleneck with these black watch plaid pants. I paired my J Crew Factory striped turtleneck with J Crew Factory stovepipe jeans. My shoes are black suede booties.
I just wore this out to lunch with my daughter and to do a few errands.

I love pairing a black (or navy) dressy dress with a plaid scarf. This is a perfect look for a Christmas cocktail party. So often, the events are cold, and wearing a scarf prevents you from being chilled. The dress in the photo is from last year, but I have linked a similar one under the image. I wore black opaque tights and black suede pumps to continue the monochromatic look that is universally flattering.
This look is perfect for a winter cocktail party.
Outfit #4: Sequined Top, Velvet Pants, and a Plaid Scarf
![Here I am wearing a black sequined top with the plaid scarf looped around my neck. I added black velvet pants.](https://drjuliesfunlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/sequins-768x1024.jpeg)
/ Sparkly Top / Velvet Pants / Booties / Scarf (here or here) / Earrings /
I wear this combination every holiday season! Sometimes I wear it with a black watch plaid scarf, while other years I pair it with a red plaid one. This is such a fun look to wear, and every time I wear it, I get tons of compliments! All three pieces of this look are classic items. You will wear each piece (separately and together) for years! I promise!
I would wear this look on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day!
Outfit #5 Black Coatigan, Cream Turtleneck, and Plaid Leggings
![Here are black watch plaid leggings with a cream turtleneck tunic and a black coatigan.](https://drjuliesfunlife.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/12/leggings-768x1024.jpeg)
/ Coatigan / Turtleneck ( or here) / Leggings / Ballet flats / Earrings /
This is the most casual black watch plaid outfit. It is the perfect outfit for decorating the Christmas tree. It’s cozy, and the leggings are stretchy. The coatigan is the ideal layering piece. I love it when the house is cool but not enough to turn up the heat! The cream turtleneck lightens up the dark coatigan and the leggings. I added black ballet shoes, but I would also wear high-riding boots because I love how leggings look with high boots.
