Denim Dresses Rule!
I love the ease and classic look of a denim dress. It always looks put together and wearing a denim shirt dress frequently is a “one and done” kind of an outfit. By that I mean, the dress is the star of the show and it’s just one piece! How great is that? And then by changing up the accessories, multiple looks can be created. This is important because many of my readers need inspiration on how to wear an item differently so as to enjoy their wardrobe more. In this blog post I want to show you four fun and distinctly different ways to wear a jean dress.
What Do I Love About This Particular Dress?
I love this particular Ralph Lauren blue denim dress because the lines are timeless. It is a shift style with a split neckline and short sleeves. The neckline is a great feature because it is easy to get on and off and by having no buttons down the front, there is no issue with possible pulling across the chest for those of us with a fuller bust (ahem). The short sleeves look cute rolled up or down and worn with little leather boots, the dress looks great in spring or fall. It’s all cotton and machine washable. I wash mine on cool and hang it to dry after just five minutes in the dryer (set a timer on your phone so it doesn’t shrink!). Even though it’s cotton, the denim is so nice and thick like a great pair of jeans, that it really doesn’t wrinkle even after a long car ride. It comes in plus sizes as well as misses. It was so easy to shop for from Macy’s.com. It is intermittently on sale for 30% off which it was when I snagged it. That said, due to the classic nature of denim dress outfits, this is a fashion for which I wouldn’t mind paying full price. And now on to the cute looks!
Outfit #1 Dress with a Woven Belt and Scarf
For those of you already following my blog, you know how much I love a little scarf at my neck! Here, I added a red print Madewell scarf. (Madewell carries several darling scarves every season, so be sure to check them out for this if you love scarves as much as me!) Then I added a wide woven brown leather J Crew belt (similar, here) to cinch my waist. I coordinated the belt with this cute J McLaughlin bucket bag that has the added features of a rattan handle and straw body (similar, here). My earrings are gold coins are a little dangly (similar, here) and both my Macy’s mesh watch and Talbots bangle are gold. Lastly, my nude suede block heeled Ann Taylor sandal complete this spring or summer look.
Outfit #2 Dress Worn For A Hot Evening
Here I paired the dress with turquoise earrings and a bracelet as well as an old straw tote. My sandals are Stuart Weitzman nude cage style ones and are very comfy on a 90 degree evening in downtown La Quinta, California. (I’m standing by a sweet hummingbird sculpture as they are a very popular bird here.) Because the dress is styled as a shift, it looks sharp belted or unbelted. Some jean dresses are more voluminous so they wouldn’t look good unbelted.
Outfit #3 Dress Worn with a Tee Underneath
In this playful look, I styled this dress with the sleeves of the dress rolled up once and then layered it over a darling Talbots red and white cotton long-sleeved tee (similar, here). Isn’t this such as fresh look?! I wore the same purse, bracelet, and watch as look number one and the same shoes as look number two. I added pearl stud earrings to this classic look. I think the tee would add a nice layer if you were going to a girlfriend lunch with too cool of air conditioning.
Outfit #4 Dress Worn with a Drapey Scarf
As I mentioned above, I am a HUGE scarf wearer and I am always on the hunt for new ones with unusual color combinations. In fact, whenever I am out at a new store but not in the mood to try something on, I typically browse the scarf section for a fun fashion fix. And when traveling, I might have a bit of an issue with weight limits with my luggage, so scarves are an easy, light-weight option.
This Land’s End scarf is from a few seasons back but isn’t it a beauty? I love the navy foulard pattern mixed with the bright lime green border (similar, here). It’s actually a large square scarf that I folded in half and then draped in a bib style. This is a great way to wear a scarf when it’s hot out because you can have the drape fall low enough that it doesn’t touch your neck. And it it gets cool later on in the evening, you can remove it from you neck and use it as a shawl! Who knew?!
Other Denim Dress Ideas
I love denim dresses styled with boots or booties and I know brown, tan or black leather or suede would pair well with this. Stay tuned for fall looks later this year. I hope this post serves as a guide to denim dress looks for ones you may already have in your closet. You also can’t go wrong with this particular Ralph Lauren denim short dress because it’s such a beauty and a fun one to own! Check it out on Macyy.com. You’ll be glad you did!
