Lovely End of Summer Tablescape

I can’t believe this upcoming Monday is actually Labor day! Unfortunately, that is considered by many to be the unofficial end of summer. I, therefore, thought it would be fun to do a post on a pretty late summer/early fall tablescape. It started with a lovely red rooster tablecloth. The funny thing about cool tablecloths is that the neatest designs are frequently along the border of the cloth instead of across the center!

This is really annoying if you want your guests to see the prettiest part of your setting. So what’s a lifestyle blogger to do? The solution is to put a solid color-coordinated cloth over the entire table in the standard way (mine is tan). Then put the decorative cloth over the solid one, but place it at an angle and fold it so that the neat design (in this case, roosters, show). Brilliant! Here’s a cute rooster cloth that has a great border, so put it over a red or blue solid cloth (red one, here) and then fold the roosters as described above.

Now layer on dark wicker placemats for texture, cream or white plates (mine are from Williams and Sonoma, and red tumblers (cuter ones, here) for a bit of sparkle (mine are from Homegoods). The red gingham napkins are a nod to summer and offer another coordinating pattern. I also added little clear votive holders with white unscented candles.

I think the neatest item in this whole table setting is actually the centerpiece. I HATE tall centerpieces because guests can’t easily see over them. So this one solves that problem by being low, but interesting to look at. It’s a cool rectangular hammered copper tray. I filled it with three small pots of ivy that I picked up at my local garden center. After the party, I just popped the plants into a pot to enjoy them as houseplants!

So there you have it. A pretty colorful table with lots of texture and visual interest for you and your guests to enjoy!
