What do you think of a chunky sweater?
Does it make you feel all cozy and ready for an apres ski look?
Or does it remind you of Bazooka Joe in the Bubble Gum Comics?
Do you think it’s a hard look to pull off if you’re over 60 (I’m 67!)?
I have several of these sweaters in my closet and I think they are something you should consider adding to yours.
The key to successfully styling a chunky sweater is to think about proportion. I find that when wearing a boxy, chunky sweater, it’s important to balance your lower half with a narrower silhouette.
In this post...
Outfit #1 of the Chunky Sweater Looks
For example, in this all-black outfit, I paired the oversized Free People Turtleneck with black straight-leg jeans from Madewell. I wore black suede booties to extend my leg line (I am 5’4″). Wearing narrower pants (it doesn’t have to be skinny jeans), straight-leg jeans, or tailored trousers helps maintain a sense of balance with the more rectangular, oversized nature of many chunky sweaters.
Outfit #2 of the Chunky Sweater Looks
In this second look, I added an ivory scarf that I draped over my neck for visual interest. This also adds a pop of color to the otherwise all-black look. Pro-tip: Note the use of simple classic jewelry in every one of these photos. I frequently wear diamond stud earrings and my stainless steel Ebel watch. You could readily wear faux studs and a more modestly priced watch to achieve the same classy, expensive look. (In my case, since I frequently wear the same items, the cost-per-wear is reduced.)

Outfit #3 of the Chunky Sweater Looks
In this third outfit, I added a grey a bit oversized puffer vest. I needed to go oversized because the sleeves of the sweater wouldn’t fit in a regular one of my vests.
In California (where I winter) a vest is the perfect third piece to complete an outfit. I actually “borrowed” this vest from Mr. G.Q’s vest inventory (just an idea if you need a bigger-than-usual armhole!).
In the close-up above, you can see the cowl neckline of this particular chunky sweater which I find to be a flattering neckline to my aging neck.
As you can see above, I have linked all the items in all three outfits IN THE CAPTIONS OF THE PHOTOS so you can find them or very similar ones. Below, I have found you a selection of chunky sweaters at various price points and made from different yarns. I prefer a selection of items and as items tend to sell out so quickly, I love having more options to consider. I hope you agree.
