How do you feel about wearing a tweed jacket for Spring?
For a long time, I only associated tweed jackets with fall and winter looks.
But, recently I fell in love with several tweed jackets. And they both are Spring tweed jackets. I loved the freshness of the colors of this one that I’m featuring in today’s post. Maybe you will too! Let’s take a look at four ways to style a tweed jacket for Spring and you can decide for yourself if you’re on Team Spring Tweed or not.
Although the Wikipedia definition of tweed is a rough-surfaced woolen cloth, typically of mixed flecked colors, originally produced in Scotland, not all of today’s tweed is made of wool. In fact, the subject of today’s post is made out of cotton and acrylic. What makes it a tweed is the pattern of various flecks of colors, and the pretty weave.
In this post...
What to Wear with a Tweed Jacket
(Outfit One)
Based on this blog post, there are many clothing items that fall under the category of What to Wear with a Tweed Plaid Jacket. In this first outfit, I mixed casual jeans with dressy nude pumps and pearls. I added a gold chain necklace as well as a gold watch to echo the round brass buttons.
To pull out the colors in the tweed jacket, I sported a Talbots magenta perfect shirt. My jeans were Mother Dazzler from Nordstroms.
I enjoyed mixing the dressy and casual elements as I find this type of juxtaposition to be interesting. I love to lean into all the textures of the tweed jacket, the pearls, the brass buttons, etc.
My jeans were straight-leg, but this plaid jacket could easily be worn with skinny jeans if that is your preference.
How to Style a Tweed Jacket
(Outfit Two)
This second outfit is a great example of another way to style a tweed jacket. It is a bit more of a casual look than the first. Instead of the nude heels, I switched to my favorite Sam Edelman cream loafers. Loafers and ballet flats are HUGE this spring! My jeans were the same raw-edged Mother Dazzlers from the first look, but my shirt was a pale blue pin-stripe cotton button-down.
I wore the shirt untucked as in the first look and I again rolled the cuffs back a bit for style and zhush!
How to Style a Tweed Jacket for Women
(Outfit Three)
When I was dreaming up this post on how to style a tweed jacket for women, it was initially surprising to me that tweed was originally a fabric made for men from Ireland and Scotland and used by farmers for working outdoors. It only seems fair that I title one section “how to style a tweed jacket for women” as apparently, we women have some tweed jacket fashions to catch up on!
I love this look! I think the pink Talbots Hampshire pants and the magenta perfect shirt look terrific under this Ann Taylor tweed jacket. Pro-tip: I think a great way to look pulled together and expensive in your outfit, is to match your top to your bottom pieces. In this case, the shirt and top are so closely coordinated that they look like a set. Then adding the plaid tweed jacket is the icing on a delicious look, don’t you think?
Again, I chose the leg-extending nude heel and classic gold jewelry.
How to Wear a Tweed Sweater Jacket
(Outfit Number Four)
Did you know that this particular tweed jacket is also a tweed sweater jacket? Thus, it is a plaid jacket, with color variations and a weave of true tweed. And it happens to also be a knit cardigan! From my perspective, it should be worn in any way that suits your fancy.
In this fourth outfit, I took the same jeans as outfits one and two, the same cream loafers as outfit number two, and added the twist of a J Crew striped tee shirt. I also tied a Sundance catalog bandana around my neck. All the colors are coordinated which is the key to successful pattern mixing. What do you think? Cute, or too much for you? Tell me in the comments below or DM me on Instagram @drjuliemarshall.
Conclusion:
So how do you feel about this tweed knit plaid cardigan jacket? Have I persuaded you to consider wearing tweed this Spring? I hope so because it’s so versatile and colorful. It goes with so many things. After this post, I styled it with a white cotton turtleneck and white jeans for a cool evening. I also wore it with a polka-dot dress here.
Have a great week!
XO,
Dr. Julie
