Are you a fan of the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale? I confess that in the past I have been a bit overwhelmed by the thought of going through so many items (in July!) to think about fall clothes. But in this post, I will share my Capsule Wardrobe for Fall as I decided to take advantage of this sale as I know it’s perfect for stocking up on fantastic basics. I read many comments and reviews and I reflected on some of my favorite Fall pieces in coming up with this list.

First, of all what is meant by the term “capsule wardrobe”? A capsule wardrobe is one where you invest in essential items that can be worn multiple ways. For those of you who follow me, you know that I am a HUGE proponent of showing you how to wear every piece I recommend in lots of interesting ways. To me, that just makes good economic sense. It’s almost always best to buy the item that is more versatile because that’s how you’ll get the most value from your purchases.

Capsule Wardrobe for Fall:

What’s neat about this collection of fourteen items, is that all the pieces can work together in a cohesive way to create lots of looks. Check through each item and then see if you have a similar item in your closet that fits you well and is in good condition. If not, consider purchasing some of my recommendations. I know this wardrobe isn’t comprehensive, but instead, it’s my hope that each and every item on this list will elevate your fall wardrobe and inject some spark into your fall looks. I will break these items into different categories as that will hopefully help to clarify the uses of the pieces.

Fall Jackets:

I just LOVE a jacket in the Fall! I love the fact that this third piece easily completes any look and makes it look so sharp! Jackets like these three can be worn as the outer piece in the Fall, but can also be grabbed in the summer for those cooler evenings as well as for those air-conditioned restaurants. And come winter, I love to wear these jackets under my overcoat so that when I get to my destination and remove that, I still feel cozy and look put together.

Halogen Leather Moto Jacket

Halogen is a brand exclusive to Nordstroms. This jacket is a great value at $199 during the sale, while afterward, it returns to $299. If you don’t have a leather moto jacket in your wardrobe, this is a wonderful buy. It has an asymmetrical zipper and is fairly unadorned. There are princess seams in the back which gives it some tailoring while the front is fairly straight. It looks good worn open as well as zipped up. I wear a size small.

1822 Denim Utility Jacket

This green-gray-colored denim utility jacket is so cute! It is SUCH A TERRIFIC BUY at $59! And it TRULY looks so much like the much more expensive Annie Bing jacket (which is $345)! It just arrived and I loved it the moment I popped it on! It has a fairly straight cut but has lots of stretch so it’s very comfortable to wear. It’s a nice medium weight and the green-gray color is so versatile. It’s a terrific neutral which looks especially good with gray, denim, and black. I wear a size small.

Milana Faux Suede Moto Jacket

If you prefer faux suede, this Milana moto jacket is for you! It’s actually made by Kut from the Kloth which is a favorite brand of mine for jean jackets as it’s a great price all the time and always wears well. This particular moto jacket is another wonderful find at $85.99 during the sale and $129 afterward. This comes in three other colors if classic black isn’t your favorite choice. I wear a size small.

Fall tops

Raw Edge Tank

This raw edge tank is a great basic and I ordered it in ivory as well as black. It also comes in a few patterns. It is a terrific (bra-friendly) layering tank that can easily go from the office under a jacket to date night without missing a beat. It’s only $29.90 during the sale, and $49 afterward, so if you love it, stock up now! It’s cut from light and drapey crepe and is machine washable. I wear a size small.

Ralph Lauren Button Down Polo Shirt

This classic Ralph Lauren button-down shirt is not on sale. I HAD to list it because it’s such an iconic-looking shirt and goes so well under these various jackets. It’s classic and timeless and looks great tucked or untucked. It’s my idea of your favorite jeans in a shirt! It sells for $98.50 and of course, features the polo pony on the front.

Caslon Scoop Neck Long Sleeve Thermal Top

When I saw this long sleeve thermal top online, I wasn’t impressed. But because of my silver hair, I decided to purchase it. Boy am I glad I did! It is so sharp with raw-edge detailing on the seam and a cozy medium-weight thermal knit. I usually find scoop neck tops to be too wide and unflattering, but this one is just right for this Goldilocks, who knew? I know you’ll be seeing this on repeat this late summer and fall. The price is $29.90 during the sale, and $49 afterward and it comes in six colors! Check it out! I wear a size small.

Great Slip Dress!

Vince Slip Dress

I am planning on this slip dress becoming my go-to dress of the season! I have read lots of blogs on slip dresses and this one has been getting rave reviews! Stay tuned for my upcoming post soon. But in the meantime, you might want to order one. It comes in black as well as a pretty coastal blue. It is a satiny fabric that is a timeless classic. I will wear it with all three jackets described above as well as with a white linen blazer for late summer. The dress is $189 now and $295 after the sale. For undergarments, I will wear the Wacaol red carpet strapless bra (reviewed below), and Spanx shorts.

Accessories

Wacoal Red Carpet Strapless Bra

This strapless bra has MANY RAVE REVIEWS on the website, so I just ordered it today. Stay tuned for my personal review of the above-described black satin slip dress. During the sale, this bra is $44.90. Afterward, the price is $70. What’s also great about this bra, is that it comes with removable straps and can convert to a regular bra, or a halter.

Cashmere and Silk Wrap

Isn’t this black cashmere and silk wrap so luxurious-looking? Come fall, my neck is always cold, so I love draping a scarf or wrap loosely over a tee shirt or other cute top. It looks terrific and expensive, but is also so practical! The black is a terrific basic that can also be worn as a shawl when draped over one’s shoulders. This item is not on sale and lists for $99.

Colette Leather Crossbody Bag

I am such a fan of a black leather crossbody bag. The black goes with so many things and the crossbody strap makes it so easy to wear! The bag is actually made by a company called ALLSAINTS and they are known for their quality leather products. This item is not on sale at $229 but I think it was such a worthwhile addition to my capsule wardrobe for fall.

Polarized Round Sunglasses

These polarized round sunglasses have a gradient to the lenses so they really offer a cool look and style. They have 100% UV protection and feel quite lightweight. They are $43.99 during the sale and $65 afterward. Mine just arrived today and I am wearing them to a picnic this afternoon. So cute!

Nike Low Rise Sneaker

Are you a white sneaker wearer? I was as a young girl and I am glad to see that they are back in vogue again. They are not on sale but are a good value with a classic style at $95.

Bernardo Black Suede Boots

These suede boots are so soft! I had a pair in black so today I just received a pair of the yummy tobacco color. This boot has just the right amount of slouch to it. On sale, they are $239.99, and afterward, they will be $368. The heel is only 2 inches which are perfect for me! Stay tuned for lots of blog posts with these.

Pants

Wit and Wisdom Jeggings

Have you tried this brand of Wit and Wisdom jeggings yet? If not, run, don’t walk to your laptop, and press “add to your cart”. These jeggings are so flattering as well as comfortable. The rise is a comfortable mid-rise and there is a lovely amount of stretch in these classic closet-essential jeans. The wash is fairly dark with light whiskering across the hips and inner thighs. They are currently $43.99 and after the sale, they will be $64.

Spanx The Perfect Pant Back Seam Skinny Ankle Pants

Consider these ankle pants your new go-to for any outfit or occasion thanks to seriously magical smoothing Ponte fabric and a comfortable, pull-on design. They have a sleek look, a great fit, and a skinny-leg cut, making them a style so flattering you’ll wear them again and again. I wear a size medium in these. During the sale, they run $84.90 and they will be $128 after the sale.
