I love boho-style tops primarily because they are so easy and comfortable to wear. In this blog, I will show you how to style boho tops several ways in hopes that some (or all) of them will resonate with you.
But before I get started showing you how to wear this style, I think I should describe what I mean by the term. Boho or Bohemian style clothing is typically characterized by colorful, loose flowy items such as long tiered gauzy skirts and dresses as well as peasant tops.
What is a boho top?
Cute Boho tops frequently have fun trim elements such as tassels, crocheted sections, embellishments with fringe and the jewelry usually involves wooden beads, mixed with charms. The look originated in the 1970’s and was initially associated with rock concerts and hippies.
That said, aspects of this look always pop up in some capacity each year. Since many of the fabrics are lightweight in nature, the style is usually associated with summer and warm weather vacations.
And while there are outfits involving head-to-toe boho, most designers seem to prefer to just use this style mixed in with more traditional American fashions. Most women prefer to wear the boho style without appearing too hippie-like. I will show you how I did just that
How to Style Boho Tops
Here’s a fun sleeveless multi-colored Bohemian style worn front-tucked into olive green Evereve joggers. (By tucking the front of the top, it avoids being too flowy. The other trick to avoid that dreaded maternity silhouette is to wear an open jacket or cardigan over the top so as to contain the volume of the top and to gently define one’s waist.)
Boho colors look especially sharp when paired with earth tones such as these green joggers. Then the dark wash AG denim jean jacket adds a similar degree of color saturation to the outfit. The tasseled gold and silver Francesca’s necklace continue a gentle nod to the boho style and the gold flat Stuart Weitzman sandals add a classic touch.
Peasant Top With Jeans
Here I wore a great comfy Loft burgundy print cotton peasant top with dark washed White House Black Market skinny jeans. I think any color denim really works well with the casual vibe of a peasant top such as this one. The leopard slip-ons are an easy neutral shoe and are a bit warmer choice on a cooler day than sandals. My pink beaded with heart charm choker is a sweet touch that continues this boho style while still appearing modern. It also fills in the open neckline a bit.
Boho Tunic Style Top With White Pants
Here I wore a soft peachy pink with blue paisley J.Jill boho tunic with a pair of white Sara Campbell cotton narrow pants. I wore a pair of J Crew nude suede heeled sandals to dress thing s up a bit. This is an example of how to add some classic white summer pants to a boho outfit. Also note the very typical embroidered trim around the neckline.
This allowed me to skip a necklace and just accent the look with Patricia Locke blue beaded slightly dangly earrings, very similar ones, here. (Boho jewelry frequently has elements of colored stones mixed with metals.) I’m also wearing a colored stone Patricia Locke bracelet, similar one, here.
White Boho Top With Jean Shorts
Here’s a white cotton embroidered and beaded boho blouse from Talbots. (Interestingly, white is the most common color for peasant tops.) I paired it with Loft dark washed cuffed denim shorts and nude laser cut block heeled Stuart Weitzman sandals. I like the ease of this outfit and as mentioned in multiple blogs of mine, the nude sandal favorably lengthens my legs. The embroidery and beading are two classic features of Boho style peasant tops. And I think the pattern of cut-outs on my sandals provide another nod to this fun style of clothing.
Boho Top With A Blazer
Isn’t this a GREAT way to wear this Bohemian blouse paired with more classic items? I loved pairing this pink flowered Old Navy boho top with my navy J Crew boyfriend blazer and J Crew vintage slightly distressed jeans in a soft blue wash. To continue the somewhat more conservative vibe, I paired nude patent leather kitten heeled Stuart Weitzman sandals with my trusty Coach tan doctor’s bag. (As a retired dermatologist, I ‘m always so attracted to the profile of this style of purse!) Then I finished off the look with a strand of costume pearls that I tied in a bolo style, similar one, here, again filling in the neckline and continuing the polished vibe of my outfit.
Boho Style In Winter
Although boho tops and clothing are most typically worn in the warm weather months, they can be worn in the cooler months if accessorized accordingly. Here I wore a purple print voile flowy boho top by Cabi under a black Evereve vest and black J Jill pants. Here’s a blog about that outfit here.
Where To Buy Boho Tops
As mentioned earlier in this piece, boho style tops, clothing and jewelry are available in many locations. As noted by the affiliate links in this post, I have been amazed and delighted to find so much boho-inspired jewelry on Amazon and fortunately, many of the pieces are quite inexpensive, which is always great, especially when just trying on a trend. (Based on how many outfits I have in this style,
I should be considered a Boho expert, instead of a newbie!) I have mentioned Old Navy, J Jill, Talbots, Evereve and Cabi as possible places to purchase these tops. Amazon has many boho tops available online.
Here are some of my favorites, here is a turquoise short-sleeved bohemian shirt, here is a black embroidered bohemian top, here is a very romantic pink floral flowy bohemian top, and here is a red boho shirt. Stay tuned and watch for more fun outfits wearing some of these! Of course, if you’re a Prime member, then all of these items and all of the cool jewelry has free shipping!
