Why a Seersucker Jacket?

A black and white seersucker jacket is a great basic wardrobe item. Black and white are both considered neutral so they readily pair with many other colors. In addition, seersucker is a traditional fabric characterized by thin, puckered, typically cotton fabric that is used for spring and summer wear. It is usually striped or checked. I’ve had this one from Talbots for several years and every year Talbots puts out another very similar one because it’s such a useful and classic addition to one’s clothing collection. I think that this blazer can be worn many different ways. In this blog I will show you two distinctly different ways to style a black and white seersucker jacket.

The Jacket with White Jeans, a Black Tank, and Pearls

Here I’m wearing the black and white seersucker jacket over white AG jeans and a black reversible tank. (The tank is reversible in that one side is v-neck and the other is u-neck.) I added black suede block heeled sandals as well as a black pebbled leather clutch that has an interesting tortoise shell clasp. I emphasized the classic black and white combination by adding pearl stud earrings, a pearl bracelet and a long strand of pearls as a necklace.

Style Tip: Notice how the jacket has a black and white polka dot lining as well as a seersucker boutineer pinned on the lapel. I love the details that blazers from Talbots have such as fun linings, removable decorative pins and pretty buttons.

The Jacket with a Print Top and Dark Wash Jeans

black and white striped jacket, orange and blue floral top, dark wash skinny jeans, filigree earrings and black sandals.

Here I paired the jacket with a vibrant orange and blue floral print top. For pants, I wore Wit and Wisdom’s Ab-Solution Skinny jeans. They’re a Nordstrom exclusive and they’re ON SALE RIGHT NOW at the Nordstrom Anniversary Sale! They’re a great buy at full price and even better on sale. I like them because they hold you in where you want to be held in, and they’re also really comfortable all day. (I did NOT grow up wearing jeans because my parents wouldn’t allow their only daughter with five brothers to do so! Thus, for me to wear jeans at 64 years of age, they NEED TO BE COMFY!)

Style Tip: I think it’s important to point out that this outfit works so well because the black and white jacket and the dark denim jeans are all such neutrals that ALL WORK TOGETHER. The vibrant top added some fun “zhoosh” and it would be just as easy to pair a blue and white seersucker jacket as the black and white one I used. (If I used a blue and white jacket in the first look above, I would instead use a navy or other shade of blue reversible tank instead of black, and probably nude sandals instead of black with the white jeans.)

Instead of the more conservative pearl studs from the first look, I elected to wear a pair of silver filigree earrings. My watch is my trusty stainless steel Ebel, and my David Yurman bangle was the first item of jewelry Mr. G.Q. ever bought for me.

Conclusion

So I hope you agree that these two outfits are quite different in their look and vibe. I love using basic items such as this jacket and successfully using it in various ways. I believe a seersucker jacket is a smart purchase that will add to your wardrobe for many years to come. The one I am wearing is sold out so I linked a darling blue and white one from Brooks Brothers as well as a very fun summery orange and white one from Talbots. Consider a striped blazer as a great addition to your wardrobe and if you stay tuned to my blog and Instagram (@drjuliemarshall), you will see lots of fun ideas on how to wear it!
