Here’s an easy fun casual memorial day outfit to wear for the upcoming Memorial Day holiday. It’s a light blue linen shirt with a pair of white denim shorts. I recently read about a fashion tip called the ‘“rule of thirds”. What it boils down to is it looks better to try and divide your look into thirds. Then it looks sharper to have your top be two thirds of your outfit with the shorts, one third.
I know it sounds kind of crazy, but I think the idea is that an outfit looks more interesting, and less frumpy if it’s divided this way instead of having the top and bottom of your outfit be equal in length. Of course the rule of thirds could be reversed if you had a top that was one third of the length of your look and the pants were two thirds.
I’m just getting the hang of this tip, but I think it’s kind of interesting to try and see especially when an outfit isn’t quite right, if the issue is this proportion. Stay tuned and I’ll revisit this in future blogs. By the way, the blogger who has taught me this principle is Jo-Lynne Shane and she has great fashion insight. The blue linen shirt is from Uniqlo last year. It washes well and doesn’t wrinkle a lot for linen. Since we’re all not able to run to the mall to pick something up due to the pandemic, you could easily substitute a blue chambray shirt and achieve the same vibe. The white denim shorts are from White House Black Market (old). The style is called the Bermuda and I like the cuff as it keeps the shorts from looking too conservative. I’m wearing oldie but goody gold flat sandals which serve as a neutral. Also the color blends well with my skin tone so it doesn’t cut my leg off and make it look shorter than it is.
I think my purse is so Jackie O don’t you agree? It’s from this season and it’s by J.McLaughlin. It’s a sturdy woven straw bag with a leather top and rattan handle. I love it because it’s timeless and I think it will hold up to years of warm weather use. It’s lined in a cute blue pin-striped cotton that is really classy.
My turquoise earrings are old and are from Francesca’s. I think turquoise jewelry looks great with denim, blue linen and of course white. So you’ll see it on me a lot in the warmer weather. My bracelet is a fun turquoise and copper charm bracelet. I got it years ago at some now-closed boutique but I think the fashion point is that it’s easy and fun to mix and match turquoise earrings with similar color bracelets and the like.
The items don’t need to match exactly; they just need to coordinate. I believe accessories really complete a look and they take a ho-hum pair of shorts and shirt and elevate them into a fashionable outfit. Do you agree? Let me know what you’re doing (if anything) for the unofficial start of summer.
I hope you enjoyed my post on this casual memorial day outfit.
I’m still thinking about the oatmeal raisin cookies!
That’s my boy!
