As a happily retired woman over fifty (I’m 67!), my wardrobe consists mostly of casual chic outfits.
I love to look cute and fashionable.

I love my clothes to be classic in their style, but I also love to have that special “je ne sais quoi“. When I create an outfit, I look in the mirror and check my reflection. I might add a scarf or a belt. Or a different pair of shoes.
I want to love my look that day, so I think, “What can I add, or take away, to this look, to make it more visually appealing?”.
In this post, I came up with four casual chic outfits for spring that all involve the same navy blue jacket. It’s funny. When I was younger, I never wore navy. I always wore black. But now, with age, I love how soft navy looks against my skin tone. I still wear black; just not exclusively.

Four Casual Chic Outfits for Spring
Casual chic style strikes a harmonious balance between laid-back comfort and refined elegance. It’s about blending everyday basics with polished pieces effortlessly to create an elevated yet approachable look.
A simple formula involves taking a casual basic item such as jeans, tee shirts, linen pants, casual dresses, or leggings.
Then add a “chic piece” such as a pretty jacket, a trench coat, a blazer, or a cardigan.
Lastly, elevate the look with accessories. Examples include scarves, jewelry, classic handbags, and classy sunglasses. The casual chic style is smart, without sacrificing comfort.

I took this navy T by Talbots Ponte jacket in this first outfit and paired it with wide-leg denim trousers. I layered it over a white v-neck tee and for a pop of color, I added a pink and orange silk scarf. Here is the link for my favorite spring wreath (very similar, here).

I love the lines and fabric of this Ponte jacket. A Ponte knit is a thick double-knit fabric that is firm and stable in the type of knit. The navy color is deep and rich. The jacket has a pretty inverted pleat on the back and a navy zipper front closure. Lastly, there are two flap pockets on the front of the piece.
Pro-tip: Orange is having a moment this spring. I am not a huge fan of orange because it doesn’t work well with my coloring. But, because the scarf is hot pink and orange, it works. Don’t be afraid to try a trend in little doses like this. It shows you’re “on trend” but still true to your personal style.

Pro-tip: Loafers are also popular this spring. I love these Sam Edelman loafers. They come in loads of colors. I like the classic style and the “bit” detail across the top of the shoe.

When I first spotted this navy jacket, I planned to wear it like this. I thought it would be a sharp casual athleisure look pairing the Jacket with the navy cargo pants and the wavey patterned top. (Here are several other ways to wear these pieces.)

I like the pleat detail across the back yoke of the jacket. I also like the wide elastic cuff of the cargo pants. The length is described as ankle length. I am 5’4″ and that’s where they hit me. (They also come in black.) The pants are soft and have a bit of stretch to them. Wearing the white sneakers is crisp and springlike. Pro-tip: The navy set is a perfect travel outfit as the dark color hides a multitude of spilled drinks when on the plane or in the car.

After getting the pieces in the second look home from the store, I started playing around with them. Do you ever do that? Many of us buy a “look” and then, that’s the way we always wear those items. That’s where bloggers like me can be helpful as we tend to “dream” about other creative ensembles.

I wore the navy jacket over a pretty ribbed v-neck sweater, and print palazzo pants. I added lightweight silver mesh earrings (similar, here) and nude sandals to continue the boho vibe. (By the way, this ribbed sweater is a classic, chic piece. It comes in six pretty colors as well.)

This is a close-up of the earrings and sweater. Pro-tip: V-necks are a flattering neckline for my aging neck as they gently spread the wrinkles over a larger area so they aren’t as noticeable.

Pro-tip: pairing the navy jacket with a navy tee is a terrific way to elevate your look. The coordination of the two pieces looks deliberate and more classic than if I wore a white or tan tee with these pants.

I am a fan of striped linen pants (old, similar, here, here. and here) as they are timeless. My sandals are nude, flat sandals that go with most of my spring and summer wardrobe.

I added affordable beaded bracelets to my classic Ebel watch. Pro-tip: Mixing high-end and low-end jewelry is a time-tested strategy I love to employ. The Ebel watch I wear daily lends a “halo effect” to the more reasonably priced bracelets.
